STEP TWO: PINPOINT WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL

What couldn’t anyone control? Sean’s behavior and whether he will overdose are both ultimately up to Sean and Sean alone. No one else in the family has control over his choices or behaviors.

What could they control? Rebecca and Jeff agreed they could, theoretically at least, control their household. However, their definitions of control started at opposite ends on the spectrum. Rebecca thought the “no drugs” policy created control, while Jeff thought keeping Sean at home under their watch was control.

They agreed they could schedule time as a family (with Shelly and with Sean, if sober) and they could seek counseling. They could research treatment centers and addiction counselors and offer appointments to Sean. They could schedule time for Shelly—to help with homework, watch her sports, and support her friendships.

What could they do about the things they couldn’t control? And what could they do about their vastly differing opinions? Jeff and Rebecca decided they could seek outside help through Al-Anon (and even Alateen for Shelly, if she wanted), family therapy, and/or couples counseling. They could learn how other families have dealt with this type of crisis—what has, and hasn’t, worked for them—gathering more information to help in decision-making.
